What's the coolest view from the highway in your state?

I see this on my way to work, and Street View really doesn’t do it enough justice: On I-85 SB, right around mile 107 in Georgia, you get my favorite view of Stone Mountain. It’s the second-largest granite monolith in the world after Uluru in Australia, and it’s hard to comprehend the scale of the thing until you see it towering over the horizon like this.

Kinja'd!!!

So, what’s the best view from your commute? Or the best you know of from your general area?

Well, there’s a lot of highway in NJ I don’t know about... but I was struck by the view on the Garden State Parkway South as you clear the top of the bridge over the Raritan River. That swoop of highway... so much desire to go WOT down the hill and around those curves at the bottom!

I feel like I get spoiled by going down the Don Valley Parking Lot Parkway during the rare trafficless times.

Considering most of my area look like this

Kinja'd!!!

I’m going province-wide, and when you do that, you get some pretty good views. This is just east of Jasper, about 5 hours away from where I live.

I’ve always liked the Powhite Parkway bridge over the James River in Richmond.

Also in the city, Riverside Drive has great views in the winter, but the rest of the year trees block it. Elsewhere in Virginia you have tons of mountain roads with great views.

From my commute? Basically this, just imagine the perspective being a little bit lower and slightly more impeded by trees. The perspective from street view is all wrong and doesn’t even hint at what you actually see when driving, so this is as close as I’m going to get since there is no way I’m going to take a picture whole driving.

Not the best in state (IMO those are out West in the mountains), but on my commute I’m pretty fond of the I-410 interchanges around SA with downtown off in the distance (you can see it on the right on this merge from I-10 East onto NW I-410 West).

Kinja'd!!!

(And here you can just see the downtown skyline peeking through between the layers of the interchange from US-281 Southbound onto NW I-410 East.)

Kinja'd!!!

Also, Google Street View has no idea how to handle this...

Kinja'd!!!

Finally, I grew up in Pittsburgh and have always loved the drama of coming out of the Fort Pitt tunnel on I-376 right onto this bridge.

Really, Ohio has some amazing back roads. The highways are not where the good views are.

Nashville’s Interstates were just cut through solid rock hills. This is a small one I found on Google. Also downtown Nashville at night is A+ material but I can’t find a good picture.

Ah Stone Mountain. A big rock with a relatively small carving of traitors. I do hope they go through with the MLK monument on top.

Ones that jump out at me are the view of downtown Austin from the top of the I-35/Ben White interchange, and the view when the Mormon Temple comes into view from the DC Beltway’s outer loop.

My favorite view from South Dakota is right when you pop over the hill on I-90 overlooking the Missouri River in Chamberlain. It goes from flat plains

Kinja'd!!!

Then you come up on the bridge

Kinja'd!!!

Then bam! Glorious Missouri River

Kinja'd!!!

Which honestly, the pictures don’t do it justice. Sure we have the Black Hills and the Badlands which most people would say are the coolest highway views in our state, but for me this will always be my favorite. It’s just such a sudden transformation from hours of rolling plains then you pop over this hill and suddenly there is this beautiful river valley and river.

This is what “towering over the horizon” looks like (Mount Rainier, viewed from roughly 70 miles away, on I-5 just south of downtown Seattle).

Kinja'd!!!

Every morning, I drive over a freeway bridge from which, on sunny days, I can see the Olympic range on the right, the Cascades on the left, the downtown skyline ahead and to the right and Mount Rainier ahead and to the left. Here’s the right-side view in Street View, on a somewhat hazy day (downtown on the left, Olympics on the right):

Not my pictures, but this is every morning during Winter and Spring, green hills and farmland. It turns brown about now except for the fields.

Kinja'd!!!

I then make a left onto the road below about a mile and half from the above pic, which threads between two minor peaks before dropping into town. This is the view out my left window immediately upon turning.

From the Turnpike extension, approaching the Holland Tunnel, you get an incredible view of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Outbound, at night, the view is even more incredible. Can’t find any pictures, but it’s pretty amazing anyway.

Probably my favourite local paved highway view. Looking North from Manitoba’s PTH 10 towards Dauphin, from Riding Mountain National Park. It’s when you crest this final hill that you begrudingly accept that you’re on a mountain. It’s beautiful on a clear day, but that’s the only photo I’ve got.

U.S. 2 is hateful to drive. In the winter the weather coming off the lake sucks, and in the summer it is clogged up with RV’s going 15 under and nowhere to pass and you’re going to get a ticket if you do pass. I’ll take anywhere in the Keweenaw Peninsula over U.S. 2. But really, the best view from the road in Michigan has to be the top of Brockway Mountain Drive.

Kinja'd!!!

Or maybe crossing the Bridge, but that puts you way too close to U.S. 2 for comfort.

Kinja'd!!!

Too bad most of my times crossing that were in the winter driving between MTU and southeast Michigan.

I’ve never been past Houghton ... or even to the U.P. in the last few years. I need to get back up there soon. BUT the few times I’ve driven U.S. 2 it was traffic free and lovely. Guess I just pick my driving times well.

(Not my picture) In Washington, you can see Mount Rainier from I-5 and other connecting highways.
